Last week Google updated their ranking system, 2 of my sites went up but I’m not sure how, Since I haven’t been doing anything different, I’m retracing my steps to find out what went RIGHT. Google swears that ranking means nothing, and yet they are still ranking sites as long as they keep it around I’m gonna go say uhhh yep it means something! Not sure what, but it mean something. I’m set out to find out what it means, but I need your HELP.
A lot of SEO(Search Engine Optimization) gurus out there always say that the main way to get your website visible by Google and in good shape is to get a lots of back links, have optimized keyword yadi yadi yada but my experience has been quite different.
I maintain about 3 active sites including my blog and 3 not so active sites (Blogs I started on impulse and kinda lose interest). So I’m comparing my blog with StaycationDirectory (since they are about the same age) to see where is the magic.
My blog Has no keywords, no major keywords whatsoever. As you all know this blog is the rambling in my head, sometimes its technical, sometimes its diapers, sometime its sexy so I don’t write around keywords. As far as back links I got about 67 backs links mostly from of you guys (my fellow bloggers) I get a fairly amount of visitors which I consider good since this blog is not getting any kinda of advertisement I have no idea how people find me, hey somehow I’m visible somewhere.
On the other hands, StaycationDirectory have almost no back link, keywords… I guess staycation would be the keyword but its not really optimized for that word. I never really center around that, yet it is thriving in Google search and getting way more visitors than my blog ever had and still they both rank a 3 on Google ranking scale! So what gives?
Does this ranking thing really mean anything? or does content is what does the trick? or maybe tons of back links guarantee grace in Google eyes?
Every time I think I got a hang on this SEO stuff, something weird like that happen and leaves me baffled!

So help me help you! Lets talk about it since we all need these SEO stuff, lets compare notes! What have you been doing to help your site visibility? are you getting any results? if we all participate in the talk maybe we’ll find a common denominator to the SEO success!

Thanks for posting this! My blog went from 2/10 to 3/10! Don’t know why, but I’m glad!

did you do anything different? get more back links, post more, more views and such?

  • Richele says:

Just recently my primary blog, http://www.underthegoldenappletree.com, went to a PR of 3. My review blog, http://www.meanmamareviews.wordpress.com, went to a PR of 2. Both blogs are under a year old.

The only thing I can attribute this to is linking to bigger sites and having sites link back to me. At least that’s what I have been told. Backlinking…and so forth also help.

What does it all say? Well, I’m not sure it speaks to popularity as much as an ability to network and understanding of always linking to a bigger site. For instance, if you write a post on a product..not a review…just mention it in a slice of life post…then put a link to where one can buy the product. Is that fool proof? I have no clue..lol…it’s what I read somewhere. Google only counts one link per post to a site…from my understanding…so no need to link a million times in one post. Again, my understanding is fragile..so feel free to correct me! LOL. :)

  • How do you find out about the google ranking? I just started blogging last month and would love more visitors to my site. My blog is about how to be a “cool” woman. Everything from recipes, meal organization, fitness to kid activities.

I think backlinks are very important in determining PR. Backlinks can include leaving comments on other blogs with your website address or joining communities like MBC and adding your link to your profile.

I much prefer seo to get traffic than the constant clicking of programs like EntreCard. One of the reasons I love WP is that it has beautiful plugins for SEO.

If you’re curious about your site’s backlinks, I recently made a post about a wonderful site that will check it for you. http://www.katrinablogs.com/who-links-to-me/

@Shelina you can download the google toolbar and it will give you ur page rank all the time or you can just got to PRchecker.com enter your URL and it will tell you your PR.

@Katrina so the back links are important huh? I always knew it was, but my StaycationDirectory site has no back link but still rank the same as my blog who has over 67 back links thats what confuse me…

  • Richele says:

Hey! I saw a bit of a Google documentary the other night and thought of you. Page Rank was named after one of the founders whose last name is Page. It’s determined by the number of links to your site. That is how it was explained..that simple. Google says that the more sites linked to you the more important you must be! lol. So that’s that. It’s all about linking and backlinking. So, in a way it’s kinda meaningless, ya know? :)
